Do you recommend purchasing tickets in advance?
Due to the popularity of Day Out With Thomas, advance ticket purchase is highly recommended. It is not uncommon for events to sell out. When purchasing tickets you will be asked to select a specific date and time for your ride with Thomas. Your ticket is valid only for that date and time.
Any chance I can buy tickets at the Event?
If all tickets sell out, we hope to be able to operate an additional train or two at the end of the day, but due to the history of other events, these also sell out very quickly. The best idea is to purchase your tickets for the Thomas Train in advance. The Caboose Train tickets will be sold at the event, so this might provide for a second train ride opportunity.
What is the Caboose Train?
The Caboose Train is a special train that will run approximately every other time that the Thomas train runs. The ride will be slightly under 1 hour and will even pass the Thomas train in the South Connersville yard. What is the Whitewater Valley Railroad?
The Whitewater Valley Railroad is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to historic railroad preservation. Events like the Day Out With Thomas provide funds that will be used to restore equipment. Nearly all of the people who you see running the trains and working at the event are volunteer members of the organization. Ask them about what they do as you have a chance to meet some of them at the event. Caboose Train crews might even have time to explain how our locomotives work.
Does the Whitewater Valley Railroad run other trains?
Yes, our scheduled trains normally leave the Connersville depot at 12:01 on a 16 mile trip to Metamora, Indiana
. These trains lay over a few hours and return to the depot late in the afternoon. See Whitewater Valley Railroads Excursions page
for details on these trips, dinner trains, and other special event trains.
Do heavy freight trains also run on the tracks used by Thomas?
No, these tracks are now owned and operated by the museum for our demonstration railroad. They are located on the former towpath of the Whitewater Canal. If you ride the Caboose Train you will be able to see portions of the former canal bed alongside the tracks. The Caboose Train is the only other train that you will likely see in operation during the event.
Where do the proceeds from this event go?
Any proceeds beyond the costs associated with the event itself remain in Connersville and will be used to further the mission of the non-profit Whitewater Valley Railroad. Please visit our special projects page
that highlights where the poceeds from past events have helped to strengthen our railroad. We appreciate your support and thank you for coming out and visiting with this.

Please notify the ticket office or train crew prior to boarding, so we may best meet your needs.
