Save the Ritchie Depot: 140 Years of History Needs a Home
Since 1880, the Ritchie Wabash Depot has stood as a silent witness to the growth of the Midwest. It survived the steam era, the expansion of the American frontier, and even a narrow escape from the wrecking ball.
Now, we need your help to give it a permanent home in Metamora.
The Goal: $80,000
Every dollar raised goes directly toward the intricate process of preserving this rare piece of railroad heritage. Your contribution will fund:
* Building Relocation: Safely moving the 140-year-old structure to Metamora, Indiana.
* Site Preparation: Creating a foundation where the depot can stand for another century.
* Structural Restoration: Expert craftsmanship to repair and stabilize the original wood-frame design.
* Living History Installation: Placing the depot beside active tracks to serve as a functional, "living" museum.
Why the Ritchie Depot Matters
Once known as "Ballou" or "North Ritchie" on the Chicago–Decatur line, this depot was the heartbeat of its community. It wasn’t just a building; it was where farmers shipped their life’s work, where families reunited, and where rural Indiana met the rest of the world.
Today, these modest wood-frame stations have almost entirely disappeared. By restoring the Ritchie Depot, we aren't just saving wood and nails—we are saving a tangible link to our region’s economic and cultural roots.
